A Student’s Go-To Guide to Kensington Market

Have you ever wondered where you can score great thrift finds, delicious food and plenty of cafés? Kensington Market, located between Spadina Avenue, Bathurst Street, College Street and Dundas Street West, is a neighbourhood gem and student staple for a perfect day out. Check out my personal recommendations as someone who frequents the area. We’ll cover cafés to study or relax in, fashion and vintage stores, as well as the best restaurants and places to grab a quick bite.

🚇 Spadina Avenue at Nassau Street

The Best Cafés in Kensington Market

1. FIKA Café

This Swedish café called FIKA is serving up unique takes on traditional coffee staples, such as an iced pineapple americano and a black forest mocha. Its minimalist interior makes it an ideal place to catch up on work, but its large outdoor patio is great for sharing a drink (and a house-made pastry) with a friend.

📍 28 Kensington Avenue

2. Augusta Coffee

Augusta Coffee is one of my favourite places to get espresso-based drinks and some great brunch picks as well. Their coffee is consistently high-quality, with the café having a coffee roastery attached to it. Equipped with both traditional seating and private spaces for meetings, Augusta Coffee is a flexible spot that’s perfect if you’re looking for a new, reliable favourite.

📍 229 Augusta Avenue

3. Jimmy’s Coffee

For a cozier, classic café vibe, I would suggest Jimmy’s Coffee. Its warm, inviting atmosphere is perfect for meeting with friends for a study session or to hang out. They also host some promotions during peak seasons, making Jimmy’s a great budget option.

📍 191 Baldwin Street

Where to Shop Vintage Clothes

1. Courage My Love

From beads and lace to high-quality vintage knit sweaters, Courage My Love has everything you need to look stylish from head to toe. Established in 1975 with their iconic blue storefront, they carry a wide selection of styles that can suit anyone’s aesthetic. However, I find they specialize in knits, occasion wear and outerwear. If you’re looking for unique pieces, I’d highly recommend Courage My Love.

📍 14 Kensington Avenue

2. Space Vintage

The struggle to find something other than the same five going-out tops is real! Space Vintage to the rescue. I always find super unique dresses, skirts and tops here. If you have a Y2K vibe, I suggest checking Space Vintage for glittery tops, miniskirts and glamourous dresses.

📍 34 Kensington Avenue

3. King of Kensington

For over a dozen years, King of Kensington has been carrying some of the coolest and quirkiest pieces for both men and women. They specialize in vintage military clothing and statement outerwear: think bedazzled, fringe, leather and denim pieces. I’d recommend King of Kensington if you’re looking for your next showstopping statement piece.

📍 217 Augusta Avenue

Food & Snack Recommendations

1. Blackbird Baking Co.

Are you a pastry with your coffee kind of person? Blackbird is my favourite place to grab a croissant after class. Their fresh pastries always hit the spot, especially on a sunny day while people watching in Kensington. Keep an eye out for their sandwiches and seasonal offerings that use local ingredients.

📍 172 Baldwin Street

2. Takoyaki6ix

Serving up delicious Japanese curries, takoyaki (octopus balls) and other Japanese street food, Takoyaki6ix is a great spot to grab a quick bite with friends after class. Their friendly service and authentic cooking set them apart. Try their frozen matcha slushy for a refreshing take on a popular drink.

📍 160 Baldwin Street

3. Sunny’s Chinese

If you’re looking for a place to grab dinner with friends in Kensington, Sunny’s Chinese is an excellent choice. Specializing in both meat and seafood while offering both vegan and vegetarian fare, there’s something for everyone. The dishes are served family-style, so order a few and enjoy together!

📍 60 Kensington Avenue

What Are You Waiting For?

Kensington Market is a vibrant area with tons of shops and restaurants for students to explore. From delicious food and drinks to unique and stylish vintage clothing stores, there’s something for everyone.
