After Dark Treats: Best Late Night Eats in Downtown Toronto

Published July 29, 2026 by Harnam Sandhur
Neon open sign.

We’ve all been there: it’s 1:00 AM, the library session just wrapped up, or you’ve finally reached the end of a Netflix marathon, and your stomach starts making more noise than a streetcar on Queen Street. Finding food in the middle of the night can be a gamble, but when you’re living in Downtown Toronto, you’re actually sitting in a goldmine of midnight snacks.

I’ve tracked down the best late-night spots in the downtown core. No national chains here, just local Toronto favourites that stay open late to keep the city fueled. Whether you need a massive slice of pizza, a loaded burrito, or some legendary Chinese takeout, these spots have your back.

They’re all worth checking out!

1. Afro’s Pizza

📍 107 Mutual St
🚇 TTC: ~6 min walk from TMU Station

Afro’s is a neighbourhood gem known for its incredible Detroit-style deep-dish crust and vibrant atmosphere. Their “OG” slices are thick, crispy, and exactly what you need after a long day of classes.

The Must-Try Item: The Hendrix Experience. It’s a wild Chicken and Waffles pizza topped with compressed tequila watermelon and habanero maple syrup. It sounds crazy, but it’s the ultimate late-night sweet-and-savory combo.

Top Tip: They have great vegan and gluten-free options too, so nobody in the group chat gets left out.

2. Grillies

📍 123 Church St
🚇 Distance from TTC: ~6 min walk from TMU Station

A Church Street staple that understands the assignment when it comes to late-night cravings. Grillies serve up everything from tacos and burritos to burgers and poutine. It’s a Toronto-born brand that feels much more personal than a typical fast-food chain. The portions are generous, and the vibe is always lively.

The Must-Try Item: The Monster Burger. If you’re truly starving, this is the one. It features a smashed beef patty and a seasoned chicken patty on one bun, with unlimited toppings.

Top Tip: Their “Grillitos”, Doritos chips loaded with unlimited toppings and dressings, are the perfect messy snack to share with roommates.

3. Fran’s Restaurant

📍 200 Victoria St
🚇 Distance from TTC: ~2 min walk from Queen Station

If you’re looking for a classic Toronto experience, Fran’s is a 24/7 icon. This diner has been feeding hungry Torontonians since 1940 and has a nostalgic, cozy vibe that feels like a warm hug at 3:00 AM. Whether you want a full breakfast at midnight or a hearty dinner, their massive menu has everything.

The Must-Try Item: The Legendary Banquet Burger. This is the burger that put Fran’s on the map. It’s a classic beef patty topped with strip bacon and cheddar cheese, simple, effective, and iconic.

Top Tip: Don’t skip the milkshakes! They are thick, hand-scooped, and the perfect companion to a side of salty fries.

4. Hong Shing

📍 195 Dundas St W
🚇 Distance from TTC: ~4 min walk from St. Patrick Station

A true Toronto legend. If you haven’t had Hong Shing after midnight, are you even a Toronto student? Known for its modern, stylish interior and consistent quality, this spot serves both classic Cantonese dishes and North American Chinese favourites. It’s been a staple for over two decades and stays open until 4:30 AM on weekends.

The Must-Try Item: Spicy Deep Fried Shrimp. Tossed with house sambal, garlic, and bell peppers, these are crunchy, spicy, and incredibly addictive.

Top Tip: Their individual meals (like General Tao Chicken on Egg Fried Rice) are huge and perfect if you’re looking for a solid meal to take back to your place.

5. Ju Sushi & Bar

📍 383 Dundas St E
🚇 Distance from TTC: ~10 min walk from TMU Station

Just a few blocks east, Ju Sushi is the hidden gem of the neighbourhood. While many late-night spots lean into greasy comfort food, Ju offers something a bit different with fresh sushi, Japanese tapas, and Korean-fusion dishes. It’s a chill, low-key spot that stays open until 2:00 AM on weekends.

The Must-Try Item: Ju Signature Maki. This roll is a feast: avocado, cucumber, cream cheese, and sushi shrimp, topped with torched crabmeat and their special house sauce.

Top Tip: If you’re in the mood for something warm, their Spicy Creamy Udon Noodle is a total sleeper hit that will keep you full for hours.

Stay fed, friends!

Whether you’re fueling a late-night study session or just enjoying the city after dark, these spots ensure you’ll never go to bed hungry. Grab your keys, throw on a hoodie, and go secure the snacks. After all, midnight memories are usually made over a box of pizza or a plate of fries.
