Whether you’re just a few TTC stops away or arriving from across the world, heading off to school is a major milestone. For many students, it’s also the first time living away from home. It might feel overwhelming, but with the right packing checklist, it doesn’t have to be.
This guide is designed to help all students get ready for the year ahead—but it’s especially useful if you’re moving into student housing for the first time.
The Basics: College & University Essentials
Whether you’re moving into a residence, shared apartment, or student housing like HOEM, there are a few essentials you’ll want to have from day one. Some of these might already be provided, others you’ll need to bring yourself.
✅ If You’re Living at HOEM
We’ve already taken care of all the essentials, so you can settle in quickly and focus on what matters most. Our apartments are fully furnished and move-in ready. For example, we provide:
- Kitchen appliances
- Cookware, crockery, & cutlery
- High-speed Wi-Fi
- Biweekly cleaning
- 24/7 front desk support
We also offer a linen service, so you don’t need to worry about packing (or buying) bulky bedding and towels—unless you want to. Check out our Standard Features for the full list of what’s included.
🏠 If You’re Not Living at HOEM
Student residences and rentals vary widely, so double-check what’s provided where you’re staying. You may need to bring (or buy) a lot more than you would at HOEM. Be prepared to supply your own:
- Furniture – bed, mattress, desk, chair, dresser, storage
- Kitchen appliances – microwave, kettle, toaster, mini fridge
- Cookware – pots, pans, cooking utensils, cutting board
- Crockery and cutlery – plates, bowls, mugs, cups, forks, knives, spoons
- Linens – sheets, pillows, comforter, towels, dish towels
- Lighting – desk or floor lamp (some rooms have limited built-in lighting)
- Internet setup – router or modem, if Wi-Fi isn’t included
If you’re unsure what’s already in your space, reach out to your landlord or residence team before move-in. You can still use this list as a base—just add or subtract depending on what’s provided.
What to Pack for School
Even with the basics taken care of, there are still some must-have items to bring with you, especially the personal touches that turn a room into your own space. You’ll notice a few repeats below, but that’s because we’ve broken things down by category to make packing (and shopping) easier.
