Toronto may not be the craziest city in terms of noise, but for those of us who live downtown and deal with hearing the traffic jams at 3am, the constant hum of construction, and the vibrant Toronto residents everywhere… it sure does feel like it. Catching quality sleep often feels like a luxury, but a good night’s rest is as essential to students as air. Here’s some tips on how to actually rest while living in the city.

Don’t Give Up!
1. Make your bedroom your safe space
Even a small dorm room can become a sanctuary! Decking your room out with ambient lighting, white-noise playing through your devices, and some soothing smells like lavender can help make everything outside your window disappear. Wash your sheets on those really rough days so sliding into bed at the end of it all feels more like a reward than a chore.

2. Unplug before bed
Doom scrolling before bed is a global epidemic, but the light coming off of your screen tricks your brain into thinking it’s still day! Try cutting out technology at least twenty minutes before going to bed – a mini, pre-bed digital detox can go a long way. Unwind with a warm shower, a book, or some chill routines of your own to ease yourself into comfort.
3. Stay consistent!
Late-night cramming is a rite of passage for every university student, but don’t let that disrupt your body’s schedule! Try to sleep and wake up around the same time every day, even weekends if you can manage it! This makes it way easier to conk out, no matter how noisy things are.
4. Take advantage of naps!
A twenty minute power nap in between classes can be life changing when your body feels like it’s running on empty. Try closing your blinds all the way and limit your nap time to 20-30 minutes for a quick refresher, but be mindful that anything longer will leave you feeling groggy instead.
Wrapping it up
Living in Toronto as a student doesn’t mean you have to completely give up on your eight hours! With a few changes, surviving the buzz and your classes is easier than you think. And hey, maybe you’ll even have time for a quick Tim’s before class 🙂
