Winter on Ice: Where to Skate in Toronto
It’s officially skating season in Toronto! It’s time for the classic Canadian sport, whether you’re gliding hand-in-hand with someone special, wobbling your way through a first lesson, or chasing that perfect winter photo, the city is full of places to hit the ice. Here are some of the classic spots to skate your way through the season.
1. Barbara Ann Scott Ice Trail
In College Park, at Yonge and Gerrard, this scenic outdoor trail is a classic Toronto skating experience. It’s especially beautiful when the lights come on in the evening and you can skate under the city sky.

2. Colonel Samuel Smith Skating Trail
If you’re up for a little adventure with a view, this long skating trail through Colonel Samuel Smith Park is a local favorite. It’s a bit of a hidden gem, and great for lovers of nature walks and chill vibes with plenty of space to skate at your own leisure.
3. The Bentway
Under the Gardiner Expressway, the Bentway transforms into a winding outdoor skating loop each winter. It’s super fun and the perfect backdrop for a photo.
4. Kew Gardens
The Kew Gardens Artificial Ice Rink is perfect for casual skating and local meetups. It has that warm “everybody’s welcome” atmosphere, ideal if you’re new to skating or just want a relaxed session with friends. Also a great place for the good ol’ Canadian pastime – HOCKEY!

5. Withrow Park
In East Toronto, at Pape and Danforth, you’ll find Withrow Park Rink. This outdoor rink is perfect for new or experienced skaters who want a quiet community feel. Removed from the downtown core, you’ll find a peaceful winter escape.
Pro Tip: The Skate Lending Library sometimes pops by popular rinks so if you don’t have your own skates, they might just lend you a pair (plus helmets and skate aids).
6. Indoor & Community Rinks
Toronto has tons of cozy indoor spots where you can skate without worrying about wind chill – great for freezing or snowy days:
- Giovanni Caboto Rink: Classic community rink with regular public skating.
- Herbert H. Carnegie Centennial Centre
- Albion Arena & Otter Creek Centre
Reminder: Be sure to check opening hours before making your way over.
After-Skate Ideas
- A hot chocolate from a nearby cafe
- A cozy brunch in a neighbourhood spot
- A stroll through one of Toronto’s winter markets such as the Distillery Winter District
