A Must-Visit Neighbourhood for Students in Toronto
Summer in Toronto is the perfect time to explore the city’s many diverse neighbourhoods and communities. One of my favourite nearby spots — just a few minutes from HOEM — is Kensington-Chinatown. It’s a vibrant, student-friendly area filled with colourful street art, outdoor markets, and an incredible mix of international and local food. So, to help you make the most of your visit, I’ve rounded up my favourite things to do in Kensington Market and Chinatown.
Kensington Market: Vintage Shops, Indie Cafés, and Global Bites
Kensington Market is one of the most unique neighbourhoods in downtown Toronto. It’s packed with cool and eclectic shops — from thrift stores and indie cafés to grocers and restaurants with flavours from all over the world. Some of my top food and hangout spots include:
- El Rey Mezcal Bar – An absolutely delicious Mexican restaurant with great vibes, beautiful decor, and a sunny patio. You’ll find it at 2A Kensington Avenue.
- Fika Café – A cozy Scandinavian-inspired coffee shop with exceptional coffee, tea, and pastries. Located at 28 Kensington Avenue.
- Midnight Arcade – A retro-style bar with free arcade games and tasty Asian-inspired cuisine. Head to 158 Augusta Avenue for nostalgic fun.
And that’s just the beginning — there are dozens more cafés, bakeries, and independent stores to check out as you wander through the Market’s colourful laneways.
Chinatown Toronto: Affordable Eats and Cultural Energy
Just a few steps away, Chinatown along Spadina Avenue offers even more to explore. This section of the neighbourhood is full of delicious restaurants, unique grocers, and a lively street culture. In the summer, you’ll often find musicians, artists, and performers lining the sidewalks, creating a vibrant atmosphere that’s hard to beat.
Here are a couple of my go-to spots in Chinatown:
- Mother’s Dumplings – A classic spot for handmade dumplings, buns, noodles, and soups. Located at 421 Spadina Avenue.
- Banh Mi Nguyen Huong – A beloved Vietnamese eatery known for their tasty and affordable bánh mì. Grab one to-go at 322 Spadina Avenue.
